The story is one often heard--two beloved sons, one returns to celebration and the loyal son is confused. What do we learn from this parable, and how can we apply it to our lives?

First, we can always be open to supporting someone who has fallen or failed. Life can be a challenge; as a leader this is a great chance to show our core beliefs. Reaching out to forgive a failure may help someone forgive him/herself or help the person view it as only a part of their journey. The ups are easy--the downs are hard. Asking for help can be difficult; do we demonstrate to others that we can and will forgive?

Beware, however, that this should not be applied to foolish behaviors or habitual hangers-on but to those truly seeking to change or grow, or to reconnect. What a rewarding opportunity!

Yet, we cannot forget the loyal son--make sure to reward that person and, as his father did, encourage him to celebrate and show appreciation for this relationship. Do we take these friends, coworkers, team members for granted? Think about your associates who need you to reach out and remind them of their importance. Thank them.

Reach out, reconnect, welcome, forgive and thank.

These are signs of being a graceful leader--connected, confident and calm.
