Do you have high standards of performance that you expect from people?  Most leaders do, despite often not knowing what it really takes for someone to succeed. But performance pressure is always present, whether from inner or outer sources. The key question is: When you think people are falling short, how do you best respond?

The answer lies in how we manage our inner core, our spiritual center. Anxiety always gives us a sense that there's no time available for people to learn. We become inflexible and cling to our former expectations. We become "My Way or The Highway" thinkers, and the people we lead reflect back our own self-disrespect in their attitude toward us.

But as ANE Leaders, we place people's growth, including our own, above satisfying our immediate need for control. By committing to learn ways to bring more inner balance into our leadership work, our judgments reflect more balanced thinking. When people fall short, we discover more of our flexibility and willingness to give and take, and people reflect back our self-respect in their commitment and loyalty.

The message: To prevent your work environment from dominating you, keep your learning journey refreshed.

As this week starts, schedule some time for your growth.  For example, how will you be improving your ability to stay calm, confident, and connected? How will you be expanding your connection to your greater purpose? How will you be discovering insights from more experienced leaders? How will you be helping other ANE leaders grow?
