        No one may be convicted by an American court unless shown guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.  This rule originated centuries ago, not to protect criminal defendants from erroneous convictions, but to protect the souls of jurors.  How have this rule and the role of juries evolved?  What purpose do they serve today?  What is their future?
